Art and Design tuition provides opportunities for personal expression, encouraging imagination, sensitivity, conceptual thinking, powers of observation and analytical abilities in practical contexts.
Pupils must choose a creative subject (Art, Drama, Engineering or Music) as one of their GCSE subjects. Through both theoretical studies and the individual development of practical skills, our teaching leads to a fuller understanding of the part played by Art and Design in the history of human development. Widening cultural horizons, enriching the individual’s personal resources and engendering self-awareness are central to our ethos.
A wide range of activities, talks and events are available outside the curriculum for anyone interested in Art and Design. Pupils take advantage of supervised studio sessions during the long lunch breaks and after school; talks and demonstrations by visiting practitioners. The Department offer trips Biannual trips to New York and Venice for Eight Form students.
Art students make contributions to a variety of school publications as well as the faculty’s magazine, Magenta. Pupils also enjoy participating in evening and weekend Art based enrichment activities organised by SPARTA (É«ÖÐÉ«ÊÓƵ’s Art Association). These include lectures given by highly regarded speakers, weekend workshops both internal and external, weekend visits to exhibitions and competitions.
Our pupils regularly exhibit their work in the Milton Gallery, which is housed within the dedicated Art building, the Milton Building. It was named after John Milton, who attended É«ÖÐÉ«ÊÓƵ’s from 1615-1625, and is used by contemporary artists as well as by our own pupils and staff.
